The installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems to reach 14.6 million units worldwide by 2027

Berg Insight estimates that the global installed base of active off-highway vehicle telematics systems reached 7.9 million units in 2022.

This includes connected units deployed on various off-highway vehicles across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors. The construction sector accounts for the largest share, driven by OEM telematics systems offered by heavy equipment manufacturers. Agriculture and mining moreover each account for a similar number of connected units deployed on machines and vehicles used in agricultural and mining operations respectively. The remainder is represented by the forestry sector including telematics systems fitted to various forestry equipment. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.1 percent, the active installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems across all sectors is forecasted to reach 14.6 million units worldwide in 2027.

“The top-10 equipment manufacturers offering telematics together account for around 70 percent of the total number of off-highway vehicle telematics systems in use across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors globally”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight. Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar as the leading off-highway vehicle telematics provider.

“Far from surprising, the leading equipment manufacturer by market share is also by far the top player when it comes to the number of off-highway vehicle telematics subscribers”, said Mr. Andersson.

He adds that this is a natural development in an industry where telematics has increasingly been included as standard with the machine purchase, gradually covering more models and equipment categories.

“Caterpillar was the first to surpass the milestone of 1 million connected assets across all segments and the company now has more than 1.4 million units”, said Mr. Andersson.

The runners-up are SANY and Komatsu. Other major manufacturers with estimated installed bases of more than 100,000 units include Volvo Construction Equipment, Deere & Company, XCMG, Hitachi Construction Machinery, JCB, HD Hyundai and Doosan Bobcat.

“Additional players having estimated installed bases of off-highway vehicle telematics units in the tens of thousands include CNH Industrial, Liebherr, Terex, JLG Industries, AGCO, CLAAS Group and Tadano”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

The installed base of construction equipment OEM telematics systems will reach 11 million units worldwide by 2027

Berg Insight, the leading IoT market research provider, has in a new market research project found that the global installed base of active construction equipment (CE) OEM telematics systems reached 6.2 million units in 2022.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.0 percent, the active installed base is forecasted to reach 11.0 million units worldwide in 2027. This includes all CE telematics systems marketed by construction equipment OEMs, either developed in-house or provided by the CE manufacturers in partnership with third-party telematics players.

The European market accounted for around 0.9 million active construction equipment OEM telematics systems at the end of 2022. The North American market is estimated to be somewhat larger than the European. The Rest of World moreover represents more than half of the global installed base of CE telematics systems provided by construction equipment OEMs.

“Most major construction equipment OEMs have introduced telematics offerings for their customers either independently or in collaboration with telematics partners”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight.

OEM telematics systems are today commonly factory-installed as standard at least for heavier machines and increasingly also for compact equipment.

“Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar as the clear leader in terms of the number of construction equipment OEM telematics systems deployed worldwide”, continued Mr. Andersson.

He adds that Caterpillar – which is also by far the leading construction equipment manufacturer by market share – has well over 1 million connected assets in the construction equipment segment specifically. Based in the US, Caterpillar’s largest markets for its telematics offerings are North America and Europe.

The runners-up are SANY and Komatsu based in China and Japan respectively, both major players on the respective domestic markets. Komatsu also has relatively large shares of its telematics units in China, North America and Europe.

“Other major players with several hundred thousand active CE telematics units include Sweden-based Volvo Construction Equipment, XCMG in China, JCB headquartered in the UK and Japan-based Hitachi Construction Machinery”, said Mr. Andersson. Deere & Company, HD Hyundai and Doosan Bobcat are also estimated to have reached the milestone of 100,000 units.

The public carsharing fleet reached 575,000 vehicles worldwide in 2022

According to a new research report by IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of users of carsharing services worldwide is forecasted to grow from 123.4 million people in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.9 percent to reach 269.4 million people in 2027.

Berg Insight forecasts that the number of vehicles used for carsharing services will grow at a CAGR of 11.2 percent from 575,000 at the end of 2022 to 979,000 at the end of 2027. The carsharing fleet grew 8.7 percent worldwide in 2022 and membership grew an impressive 43.8 percent worldwide.

“The number of people using carsharing services has increased rapidly in recent years, especially in Europe and Asia-Pacific”, said Martin Cederqvist, IoT analyst at Berg Insight.

Other markets that show promising signs are the South American and Middle Eastern markets. North America has struggled in recent years, but partly recovered in 2022, when the total fleet size and membership increased by 7.9 percent and 9.1 percent respectively.

CarSharing Organisations (CSOs) offer members access to a fleet of shared cars 24/7 from unattended self-service locations. Usage is billed by the minute/hour and by distance driven, with rates that include fuel, insurance and maintenance.

Today, most CSOs use station-based networks with roundtrip rental. This operational model requires members to return a vehicle to the same designated station from which it was accessed.

Another model that is rapidly gaining in popularity is free floating carsharing, which enables members to pick up and drop off cars anywhere within a designated area.

In recent years, a number of CSOs have also experimented with hybrid models of roundtrip rentals and free floating carsharing.

Mr. Cederqvist, said:

“Free floating carsharing has become increasingly popular and is expected to become the most common operational model in Europe in the coming years in terms of both membership and fleet size.”

A connected fleet and specialized software platforms are today necessary to run a carsharing business covering operational activities ranging from management of in-vehicle equipment, fleet management, booking management, billing, as well as operations supervision via dashboards and data analytics.

While some CSOs are using in-house developed hardware and software solutions for their operations, the majority sources these kinds of products and services from specialised technology vendors. Some of the vendors offer an end-to-end solution including both telematics equipment and software platforms while other vendors focus on one of the areas.

Leading vendors of hardware and software platforms include Invers, Convadis, Continental, Humax, Vulog, Ridecell, Optimum Automotive Group, Mobility Tech Green, OCTO Telematics, Targa Telematics and Glide.io.

Carsharing services are offered by specialist carsharing companies, car rental companies, carmakers, as well as public transport operators. Examples of leading CSOs backed by carmakers include Free2Move (owned by Stellantis), Volvo On Demand (owned by Volvo Cars), Zity (partly owned by Renault), Wible (owned by Kia) and Kinto Share (owned by Toyota).

“In recent years, a few carmakers have exited the carsharing market. BMW and Mercedes-Benz left the market when they sold their joint venture Share Now to Stellantis in 2022. Similarly, Volkswagen left the market in November 2022 as the carsharing service WeShare was acquired by the German CSO Miles. Stellantis now runs the leading carsharing operator in the car OEM segment Free2Move where Share Now is now incorporated”, said Mr. Cederqvist.

Sixt Share (owned by Sixt), Zipcar (owned by Avis Budget Group) and e-GO! Drivalia (owned by Leasys) are examples of carsharing companies owned by car rental and leasing players. Specialist CSOs include Times Car Plus (owned by the Japanese parking lot operator Park 24), Socar in South Korea, EvCard and Liandong Cloud in China, Enjoy (owned by the Italian energy company Eni), Mobility Carsharing in Switzerland, Miles, Stadtmobil and Cambio in Germany, Citiz in France, Communauto in Canada and GoGet in Australia.

“The top 30 carsharing service providers accounted for about 80 percent of the carsharing members and managed close to 64 percent of the carsharing fleet worldwide at the end of 2022”, concluded Mr. Cederqvist.

Berg Insight, the world’s leading IoT market research provider, today released new findings about the vehicle telematics hardware market.

More than 47.2 million aftermarket telematics devices were sold worldwide during 2022, corresponding to a market value of € 2.4 billion. The performance of the market was still affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the following supply chain crisis, but the market has shown recovering signs in 2023. Until 2027, annual shipments of aftermarket telematics devices are forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5 percent to reach 77.6 million at the end of the forecast period.

Berg Insight estimates at the same time that global shipments of OEM telematics hardware for passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles reached close to 58.4 million units in 2022 corresponding to a market value of € 8.4 billion.

A combination of commercial and regulatory drivers now encourages a broader set of carmakers to expand availability of connected car services across geographies and market segments.

There are also numerous OEM telematics offerings from commercial vehicle manufacturers. The attach rate of embedded telematics devices among passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles is forecasted to increase from about 72 percent in 2022 to 93 percent in 2027.

Martin Cederqvist, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight, said:

“Berg Insight ranks Teltonika as the market leader in the aftermarket telematics hardware segment reaching telematics hardware sales of € 139 million.”

Europe and North America reached 30.4 million active insurance telematics policies in 2022

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of insurance telematics policies in force on the European market reached 13.6 million in Q4-2022.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.9 percent, this number is expected to reach 20.7 million by 2027. In North America, the number of insurance telematics policies in force is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.7 percent from 16.8 million in Q4-2022 to reach 29.2 million in 2027.

The US, Italy, the UK and Canada are still the largest markets in terms of insurance telematics policies. In North America, the market is dominated by US-based Progressive, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide and State Farm as well as Intact Financial Corporation and Desjardins in Canada. The Italian insurers UnipolSai and Generali together accounted for around 50 percent of the telematics-enabled policies in Europe. Insurers with a strong adoption in the UK moreover include Admiral Group and Direct Line.

The European insurance telematics market is largely dominated by aftermarket black boxes while mobile applications followed by self-install OBD devices represent the vast majority of the active policies in North America. Berg Insight expects continued increase in the uptake of smartphone-based solutions in all markets as well as an increase in the use of OEM telematics data in usage-based insurance programs.

The insurance telematics value chain spans multiple industries including a large ecosystem of companies extending far beyond the insurance industry players.

“Automotive OEMs like Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Tesla and Toyota have all launched solutions to enable usage based insurance for their customers”, said Caspar Jansson, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight.

Connected car applications put OEMs closer to the drivers and players such as LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Verisk and CCC Information Services partner with OEMs and normalise connected car data in telematics exchanges which enables insurers to utilise telematics data from a vast range of sources as long as the policyholders agree to share their driving data.

Aftermarket telematics still plays an important role in the market for usage-based insurance. Octo Telematics has a dominant market share with more than 5.7 million devices installed in insurance telematics programs. Other end-to-end solution providers such as Vodafone Automotive, Viasat Group, Targa Telematics, IMS and The Floow are also important players on the insurance telematics market.

“Smartphone-based insurance telematics solutions are becoming a more mature solution now and we can see many insurers that start to take advantage of the concept’s potential in claims handling and as a marketing tool for example”, continued Mr Jansson.

Cambridge Mobile Telematics is a leading player in the mobile-based segment of insurance telematics and powers more than 10 million insurance telematics policies, mainly in the US. Other notable vendors of smartphone-based insurance telematics solutions include Arity (subsidiary of Allstate), Dolphin Technologies, Radius Telematics, Sentiance, OSeven Telematics, Movingdots, DriveQuant, Sycada and Telematics Technologies.

Mr. Jansson concluded:

“The uptake of smartphone-based insurance telematics policies is motivated by the low cost for implementation and insurers can also increase their customer interaction and loyalty with well-thought-out marketing and gamification features.”

Distributing services and products through third parties is the most common go-to-market strategy for aftermarket car telematics solution vendors. Important sales channels include insurance companies, dealers and importers as well as direct-to-consumer channels such as mobile operators and online retailers. Aftermarket services targeting a specific customer group can furthermore gain an advantage in specialisation compared to OEM telematics services that are developed for a wide range of use cases. Dealers is an example of a customer group that aftermarket service providers serve successfully as the telematics offering can be adjusted to fit their business needs.

“Even though OEM telematics systems are becoming more common, many dealers are interested in aftermarket telematics systems for customer management as well as lot management. Aftermarket car telematics hardware enables dealers to access data in an actionable format across car brands and trim levels. Today, there are many different form factors applicable for aftermarket car telematics ranging from professionally installed hardwired blackboxes to self-installed OBD dongles and battery-powered devices. Solutions aimed at dealers and vehicle finance institutions in the US mainly use LTE -M devices and LoRaWAN has become a connectivity option for asset tracking and SVR in Latin America, North America and Europe.

Embedded car OEM telematics subscribers exceeded 200 million in 2022

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of telematics service subscribers using embedded systems will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.1 percent from 202.3 million subscribers at the end of 2022 to 426.4 million subscribers at the end of 2027.

Moreover, Berg Insight forecasts that shipments of embedded car OEM telematics systems worldwide will grow from 50.3 million units in 2022 to reach 77.3 million units in 2027, which represents an attach rate of 94 percent at the end of the forecast period.

New passenger car and light truck registrations increased 0.3 percent to 69.7 million worldwide in 2022. Performance was highly affected by the semiconductor shortage in several markets. Berg Insight still anticipates high growth of OEM telematics subscribers in the next years as connected car services become ubiquitous in all major car markets.

Carmakers are still experimenting with business models for connected car services as renewal rates for telematics subscriptions after the initial free period still remain relatively low. Competition and local regulations will likely lead to that a growing number of brands will offer free basic services such as safety and diagnostics for the lifetime of the vehicle. Carmakers are expected to offer connected car services through a modular sales approach where customers can order services individually and thus generate revenues on value-added services built on top of basic telematics services.

Carmakers have also begun selling premium features and enhancing car performance via OTA updates. BMW for example offers a range of vehicle functions in the form of digital after-sales services in the ConnectedDrive store. Other carmakers offering similar services include Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche. The increasing adoption of the Android Automotive OS and Google Automotive Services (GAS) is moreover a trend in the automotive industry and will likely have an effect on the connected car value chain in the future. Traditional vehicle-based platforms have also faced intense competition from portable and nomadic devices and have had a severe disadvantage in the longer development cycles.

“Connected car services have evolved from being a differentiating factor to a commodity. To offer more attractive digital experiences, carmakers increasingly focus on incorporating third-party apps into infotainment systems, providing access to the same apps that drivers have in their smartphones”, said Martin Cederqvist, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight.

Android Auto and Apple Carplay have been a way to incorporate third-party apps, but carmakers are more and more focused on providing access to the apps directly through the car infotainment system, without the need for smartphone connectivity. The increasing adoption of Google Automotive Services (GAS) has been a popular mean to achieve this.

General Motors had more than 21.0 million connected cars at the end of 2022 and BMW had about 20.0 million connected cars. Toyota Motor Group, Stellantis and Volkswagen make up the remaining top five carmakers in terms of embedded OEM telematics subscribers.

Mr Cederqvist, concluded:

“As many volume brands now offer connected services for free in their main markets it is expected that such players will constitute a large part of the growth of connected car subscriptions in the coming years.”

Additional automotive OEMs with more than 10.0 million active connected cars at the end of 2022 include Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai.

The frontrunning North American video telematics market is more than three times the size of the European, which is so far largely dominated by activities in the UK. Berg Insight estimates that the installed base of active video telematics systems in North America reached almost 3.9 million units in 2022. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.0 percent, the active installed base is forecasted to reach 8.8 million units in North America by 2027.

In Europe, the installed base of active video telematics systems is estimated to over 1.1 million units in 2022. The active installed base in the region is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 17.9 percent to reach 2.5 million video telematics systems in 2027.

The video telematics market is served by a number of different types of players, ranging from specialists focused specifically on video telematics solutions, to general fleet telematics players which have introduced video offerings, and hardware-focused suppliers offering mobile digital video recorders (DVRs) and vehicle cameras used for video telematics.

“Berg Insight ranks Streamax, Lytx and Samsara as the leading video telematics players in their respective categories”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight. He adds that Streamax is the leading hardware provider, having more than 2.4 million mobile DVRs installed in vehicles worldwide to date. The company also offers software dashboards which are widely used together with its devices.

“Lytx has the largest number of video telematics subscriptions, while Samsara stands out among the general fleet telematics players with a significant number of camera units deployed across its subscriber base.”

Additional sizeable players in this space include the new channel-focused brand Sensata INSIGHTS (including the acquired video telematics company SmartWitness), the fleet management player Motive (formerly KeepTruckin), the hardware-focused video telematics company Howen, and the fleet management provider Solera Fleet Solutions (which acquired the commercial vehicle telematics pioneer Omnitracs including the video safety specialist SmartDrive).

“The remaining top-10 players are Netradyne, Nauto and VisionTrack which all have a primary focus on camera-based solutions specifically”, said Mr. Andersson. Other noteworthy players competing in the video telematics space include video-focused solution providers such as Bendix (SafetyDirect by Bendix CVS), Idrive, SureCam, LightMetrics, Waylens, Seeing Machines and CameraMatics; fleet telematics players including Trimble, Matrix iQ, MiX Telematics, Forward Thinking Systems, Radius Telematics, ISAAC Instruments, Azuga, Microlise, Trakm8 and AddSecure Smart Transport; as well as the hardware-focused supplier Pittasoft (BlackVue). “These players have all reached estimated installed bases in the tens of thousands”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

The market value for connected cars and IoT is also expected to climb to $42 billion by 2024 from $27 billion in 2020, with a CAGR of 9.2%. At the same time, the global automotive IoT market has reached a value of $144.42 billion in 2023, with a predicted value of $219.61 billion by 2026.

What’s clear is that IoT is the future, and automotive IoT is changing the development trajectory of the entire concept of human mobility.

Autonomous Vehicles

The market for autonomous cars also looks likely to grow in the coming years, with IoT playing a critical role in developing and deploying these vehicles. IoT-powered autonomous cars can communicate wirelessly with other vehicles, transportation infrastructure, and even pedestrians. This communication can enhance safety and lead to more efficient road use, decreasing traffic congestion and travel time.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 brought many AV trials to a temporary halt, many have since resumed. However, like the shared mobility situation, it has become gradually clear that there may still be a long road to a world where AVs are available at a significant scale.

Since batteries are a key input cost and primary limiting factor on the overall cost of ownership, the EV market’s long-term success hinges on developing even more efficient and cost-effective batteries. As a result, many companies are investing in the research and development of entirely new battery technologies to meet this demand.

According to Global Data, the global demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will approach 11 million units in 2023, with 12.5% of Light Vehicle (LV) sales globally in 2023 being a BEV, while the total electrified market will exceed 30% of demand. In North America, BEV sales will break the 1 million units level in 2023 with 1.3 million EVs delivered. Therefore, share-wise, BEVs are likely to exceed 7% of the North American LV market in 2023.

Electric Vehicles (EVs)

The increasing demand for electric vehicles (including hybrids) is a significant trend in the automotive industry, driven by concerns over climate change and environmental sustainability. As a result, many automakers are investing in the development of electric vehicles, and the technology is likely to become more widespread in the coming years.

According to the International Energy Agency, electric vehicle (EV) sales doubled from 2020-21 to a record total of 6.6 million or just under 10% of the global total of car sales. Even more stunning, these numbers reflect a quadrupling of the market share of EVs in 2019. With these increased sales numbers, the total global number of electric cars fully tripled from 2018 to reach a total of around 16.5 million. This strong rise in global sales has kept pace, coming into the first quarter of 2022 with a 75% rise from the prior year up to 2 million cars. These trends show no signs of slowing down, with demand for electric vehicles now vastly outstripping supply as manufacturers rush to build additional capacity and utility providers prepare for the mass electrification of transportation.

Automotive IoT Case Study

One of the most intriguing areas of the emerging electric vehicle market is the convergence of home entertainment technologies with automotive IoT in the form of in-car automotive multimedia systems that would be the envy of the neighborhood just a few years ago. These display and multimedia units are the vehicle’s primary human-machine interface (HMI), and they can double as a fully-fledged computer, video gaming console, or entertainment unit.

Quectel Wireless Solutions, a global IoT and automotive solutions provider, today announces the launch of the ultra-wideband (UWB) automotive grade AU30Q module.

Based on Qorvo’s DW3300Q UWB chipset, the module enables precise real-time outdoor and indoor localization and reliable wireless communication.

Featuring an embedded antenna, the AU30Q provides improved location capabilities, enhanced security and reliable data transmission, making it particularly suited to smart car access applications such as keyless entry, in-car passenger detection, personnel approaching detection, easy trunk access, wireless charging and battery swapping for electric vehicles.

“With the increasing availability of UWB technology in smart phones, many car OEMs are considering adopting UWB as a solution in their next generation of vehicles to offer drivers secure car access,” said Manfred Lindacher, Vice President of Global Sales, Automotive International, Quectel Wireless Solutions.

Incorporating the AEC-Q100 qualified Qorvo DW3300Q chipset, the AU30Q supports UWB Channels 5 (6.5 GHz) and 9 (8 GHz) and offers data rates of 850 Kbps and 6.8 Mbps. It can be flexibly adapted with an external MCU that has CAN or Bluetooth connectivity to accommodate for any possible architecture need in the car. Compared to chip-down designs, the UWB module can help automotive customers deploy their solutions more efficiently, save development resources, remove for customers the hurdle of complex RF and antenna design aspects, and dramatically shorten the time-to-market.

AU30Q enables the newest generation of digital key and car access, where UWB defeats attacks by making the vehicle aware of the true localization of the owner, thru real-time super-accurate distance measurement between the vehicle and the owner’s key fob, smart phone, or smartwatch. For those applications, AU30Q fully conforms to the latest standards set by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC), a global digital key standardization organization, making it compatible with different vehicle manufacturers and smart phone OEMs. It also fully conforms to the Intelligent Car Connectivity Industry Ecosystem alliance (ICCE), a leading organization for digital key standardization in China. Similarly, AU30Q alignment with FiRa™ PHY and MAC specifications enables interoperability with other FiRa™ compliant devices.

The AU30Q module can be used in Single-Sided Two-way Ranging (SS-TWR) and in Double-Sided Two-way Ranging (DS-TWR) systems to locate assets. AU30Q can quickly be used to implement Real-Time Localization Systems (RTLS), as well as automated navigation systems in GPS-denied areas, with an accuracy of 10cm.

With a compact and unified form factor of 12.0 mm × 25.0 mm × 2.4 mm, the AU30Q is an ideal UWB solution for size sensitive applications, and helps manufacturers reduce product size and optimize design cost. This surface mounted module is extremely robust and features two highly reliable SPI interfaces to host the processor as well as an internal antenna, which improves design flexibility and reduces development time and effort.

The installed base of telematics devices in the car rental and leasing market in Europe and North America reached 5.6 million in 2021 according to a new market research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight.

The uptake of telematics in the industry is believed to be driven by requirements for fleets to increase fleet utilization, the emergence of new mobility services and the general electrification trend in the automotive industry.

The COVID-19 pandemic has moreover pushed the demand for digital business models, increasing the uptake of telematics in both the rental and leasing industries.

The total active installed base is forecasted to reach 12.6 million by 2026 across the car rental and leasing fleets in the two regions.

The telematics penetration rate across the car rental fleets in Europe and North America is expected to grow from 38 percent in 2021 to 86 percent in 2026. The telematics penetration rate in the total population of leasing vehicles in the two regions reached 35 percent in 2021 and is expected to reach 61 percent by 2026.

Several categories of telematics applications are today used in the context of car rental and leasing. “The main benefit of deploying telematics among car rental and leasing companies is improved control over assets”, said Martin Cederqvist, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight.

Fleet managers have an obvious interest in tracking the location of their vehicles and monitoring their status in order to prevent fraud, theft and mistreatment. In the long run, this leads to reduced operational costs and also potentially lower insurance premiums.

Mr Cederqvist continued:

“Telematics technology may also enable new business models or services such as long-term pay-per-use contracts for private vehicles or automated mileage reporting for company cars as well as digital and contactless car rental and carsharing experiences.”

The car rental companies have also had challenges to meet an increasing demand for rental cars in the last year due to semiconductor shortages and production disruptions in the automotive industry, which in turn has had a positive effect on telematics adoption as astute use of telematics systems has proven to contribute to optimal fleet utilization.

The telematics value chain spans multiple industries including a large ecosystem of companies, including hardware specialists, software specialists and end-to-end solution providers. Telematics players active on the car rental and leasing market include telematics specialists which are only or mainly active in the rental and leasing space, offering solutions for digital access or vehicle fleet management.

Examples of companies present on the rental and leasing market include the fleet management solution vendors Webfleet, PowerFleet and Geotab.

“Geotab has established itself as a leading telematics service provider in the rental and leasing industry and has an installed base of more than 600,000 telematics subscribers in this segment in the two regions”, said Mr Cederqvist.

Additional notable telematics service providers in the rental and leasing telematics market include Targa Telematics, CalAmp, Octo Telematics, Airmax, IMS and Zubie as well as specialized companies such as RentalMatics, HQ Rental Software, Kirrk and TSD Mobility Solutions. Telematics data integration between automotive OEMs and rental and leasing companies have become increasingly common and it is anticipated that the involvement of automotive OEMs will accelerate in the rental and leasing telematics industry in the coming years.

Quectel Launches Automotive Grade 5G NR Release 16 Modules to Support Autonomous Driving

Quectel Wireless Solutions, a global IoT and automotive solutions provider, today announces its new automotive grade 5G NR modules, the AG59x series.

The new modules deliver a wide range of enhancements including multi-gigabit cellular connectivity, C-V2X PC5 direct communications, improved location services, a high-performance multicore application processor as well as strengthened security, making it an ideal solution in supporting the next generation automotive applications.

The new range of modules include the AG59xH series and the AG59xE series and complies with the international IATF 16949:2016 automotive quality management system to address the demanding requirements of automotive devices. Featuring high robustness, the AG59x series delivers strong performance even under high temperature environments.

“We are very excited to bring the highly anticipated 5G NR Release 16 module to global automotive markets. Its significant improvements in latency and ultra-reliability are critical in supporting autonomous driving,” said Manfred Lindacher, Vice President of Global Sales, Automotive International, Quectel Wireless Solutions.

“Combined with its many other advantages, our AG59x series will be an excellent choice for a wide range of automotive applications including telematics boxes, telematics control units, C-V2X systems, on-board units, and roadside units.”

Meeting the 3GPP Release 16 specification and supporting both 5G NR standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, the AG59x modules are backward-compatible with existing LTE, WCDMA and GSM networks, allowing them to be connected in areas without current 5G NR deployment. Additionally, its Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology can help tackle poor signal coverage when needed.

The AG59x supports 4 x 4 downlink multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology which greatly improves wireless communication performance and optimizes data speeds. The AG59xH delivers maximum downlink rates of 4.4Gbps and uplink rates of 900Mbps for 5G NR, while the AG59xE provides up to 2.4Gbps peak downlink rate and 550Mbps uplink rate. Their faster data speeds ensure that user emergency data and diagnostic data can be transferred in real time for increased reliability.

Supporting optional C-V2X PC5 direct communications, the AG59x brings superior performance in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside infrastructure (V2I) communications for improved traffic efficiency and safety. The module integrates a powerful application processor with up to 20KDMIPS computing power available to run C-V2X stack and applications. It also has an integrated ECDSA engine fulfill C-V2X verification capability.

Additionally, the highly integrated AG59x module provides flexible GNSS positioning services including L1+L5 / L1+L2 (optional) dual frequency GNSS, dead reckoning (DR), and PPE + Data Correction Service to achieve quick and precise location positioning services.

Available in LGA packages, the AG59x is pin-to-pin compatible with Quectel’s previous generation 5G NR automotive modules AG55xQ and AG57xQ, which allows global OEM and Tier 1 customers to upgrade their devices easily and seamlessly through a simple drop-in replacement. The AG59x provides a variety of interfaces including PCIe 3.0, USB 2.0 & 3.1, SDIO, I2S, SPI, I2C, UART, PCM, ADC, (U)SIM, 1PPS, GPIOs. It also supports RGMII and SGMII interfaces at the same time which greatly improves the adaptability of in-vehicle Ethernet.

The Quectel AG59x series is complemented by its range of high-performance antennas, already in use in the autonomous car market. Customized antennas are also supplied to fit for various vehicle setup environments. In particular, Quectel’s range of combo antennas, which integrate multiple technologies such as 5G, 4G, and GNSS, offer a highly flexible and reliable antenna solution for automotive applications.

Engineering samples of the AG59x modules will be available in the first half of 2023, with multiple variants targeting global markets.

The installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems to reach 12.2 million units worldwide by 2026

Berg Insight estimates that the global installed base of active off-highway vehicle telematics systems reached 6.6 million units in 2021.

This includes connected units deployed on various off-highway vehicles across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors.

The construction sector accounts for the largest share, driven by OEM telematics systems offered by heavy equipment manufacturers. Agriculture and mining moreover each account for a similar number of connected units deployed on machines and vehicles used in agricultural and mining operations respectively. The remainder is represented by the forestry sector including telematics systems fitted to various forestry equipment. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.2 percent, the active installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems across all sectors is forecasted to reach 12.2 million units worldwide in 2026.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“The top-10 equipment manufacturers offering telematics together account for 70 percent of the total number of off-highway vehicle telematics systems in use across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors worldwide.”

Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar and Komatsu as the leading off-highway vehicle telematics providers. “Far from surprising, the leading equipment manufacturers by market share are also by far the top players when it comes to the number of off-highway vehicle telematics subscribers”, said Mr. Andersson.

He adds that this is a natural development in an industry where telematics has increasingly been included as standard with the machine purchase, gradually covering more models and equipment categories.

“Caterpillar was the first to surpass the milestone of 1 million connected assets”, continued Mr. Andersson. Other major manufacturers with estimated installed bases of more than 100,000 units include SANY, Volvo Construction Equipment, Deere & Company, Hitachi Construction Machinery, JCB, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Doosan Bobcat.

“Additional players having estimated installed bases of off-highway vehicle telematics units in the tens of thousands include Liebherr, Terex, CNH Industrial, CLAAS Group, AGCO, JLG Industries and Tadano”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

Featuring PC5 direct communications, the module enables vehicles to effectively communicate with one another and with their surroundings, ensuring improved safety and traffic efficiency.

The AG18 supports vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communications on the unified 5.9GHz intelligent transportation system (ITS) band without the need of a (U)SIM, cellular subscription, or network assistance.

In addition to superior C-V2X communication capabilities, the AG18 module features flexible positioning service options including L1+L5 dual frequency GNSS, Qualcomm Dead Reckoning (QDR3) and high-precision PPE (RTK) technologies, ensuring that global automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers can leverage location technology appropriate to their application requirements.

The AG18 is pin-to-pin compatible with Quectel’s previous-generation C-V2X module AG15, allowing existing OEM customer devices to migrate seamlessly and upgrade through a simple drop-in replacement that will greatly reduce their design cost and development time. Additionally, the AG18 includes multiple interfaces including PCIe, USB 3.0/2.0, SPI, I2C, UART, GPIO, ADC and 1pps, enabling customers to develop a wide range of applications including Telematics Control Unit (TCU), Telematics BOX (T-BOX), Virtual Box (V-BOX) and Roadside Unit (RSU).

This 5G New Radio Sky5A RF front-end solution will accelerate the deployment of this cutting-edge protocol across an array of automotive OEM and consumer service offerings.

The installed base of construction equipment OEM telematics systems to reach 9.6 million units worldwide by 2026

Berg Insight has in a new market research project found that the global installed base of active construction equipment (CE) OEM telematics systems reached 5.2 million units in 2021.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.0 percent, the active installed base is forecasted to reach 9.6 million units worldwide in 2026. This includes all CE telematics systems marketed by construction equipment OEMs, either developed in-house or provided by the CE manufacturers in partnership with third-party telematics players.

The European market accounted for around 0.8 million active construction equipment OEM telematics systems at the end of 2021. The North American market is estimated to be somewhat larger than the European. The Rest of World moreover represents more than half of the global installed base of CE telematics systems provided by construction equipment OEMs.

Most major construction equipment OEMs have introduced telematics offerings for their customers either independently or in collaboration with telematics partners.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“OEM telematics systems are today commonly factory-installed as standard at least for heavier machines and increasingly also for compact equipment.”

Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar and Komatsu as the leading construction equipment OEMs in terms of the number of CE telematics systems deployed worldwide.

“Caterpillar was the first to surpass the milestone of 1 million connected assets in the construction segment”, continued Mr. Andersson.

He adds that Caterpillar and Komatsu are also by far the leading construction equipment manufacturers in terms of market share. Other major players with several hundred thousand active CE telematics units include SANY in China, Sweden-based Volvo Construction Equipment, JCB headquartered in the UK and Japan-based Hitachi Construction Machinery. Deere & Company, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Doosan Bobcat are also estimated to have reached the milestone of 100,000 units.

“Additional players having installed bases of construction equipment telematics units in the tens of thousands include Liebherr, Terex, JLG Industries, CNH Industrial and Tadano”, concluded Mr. Andersson.
