With high performance and rich media functions, the smart module is ideal for industrial and consumer applications that require high processing power and multimedia functions.

The module is powered by the Qualcomm® QCS8550 System-on-Chip (SoC) for IoT from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., delivering an impressive combination of flexibility and performance. It supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and incorporates 2×2 Wi-Fi MIMO technology, providing users with enhanced connectivity options.

“Qualcomm Technologies is proud to collaborate with Quectel on their SG885G-WF to bring high performance connectivity solutions to consumers,” stated Dev Singh, Vice President, Business Development, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Utilizing Quectel’s extensive infrastructure of cellular modules, the SG855G-WF exemplifies the necessary capabilities needed to adapt to tomorrow’s technology in IoT and beyond.”

With computing power of up to 48 TOPS, the module offers robust video capabilities, including video encoding at 4K at 120 fps or 8K at 30 fps, as well as video decoding at 4K at 240 fps or 8K at 60 fps. This ensures smooth and high-quality video processing for various applications.

Measuring 49.0mm x 51.0mm x 4.25mm, the SG885G-WF is suitable for global deployments and offers 12 GB LPDDR5X plus 256GB UFS memory. In addition, the module offers a rich set of interfaces that include LCM, camera, I2S, PCIe, UART, USB, I2C and SPI. These, in addition to adoption of the Android operating system, extend the module’s applicability to wide range of IoT and M2M applications including videoconferencing systems, live streaming devices, gaming, computing, robots, drones, AR/VR, intelligent retail and safety.

Quectel provides a range of high-performance antennas that greatly enhance wireless connectivity, aiming to assist customers in streamlining their design processes. By combining Quectel’s antennas with the SG885G-WF Android Smart module, IoT developers can effectively reduce both time-to-market and costs associated with their IoT devices.

Moreover, the module offers the advantage of seamless integration with Quectel’s range of cellular modules, enhancing connectivity, flexibility, and integration possibilities even further.

This forward-thinking enterprise sought to democratize robotics education by creating an affordable yet fully functional programmable robot kit. To actualize their vision, they collaborated with Softeq to create an electronic kit that empowered children to assemble, program, and remotely control robots using a smartphone.

The kit included an open-source hardware design, more than 530 plastic parts, a library of 3D printable parts, and firmware. However, the journey to create this pioneering solution was not without challenges.

Smartphone-Controlled Robots: The Power of IoT and Custom Firmware

The crux of Revolution Robotics’ solution was the smartphone-controlled operation of the robots. This smartphone-driven interface was possible because of innovative firmware solutions that enable smartphones to program the robot’s logic and command its actions. The robot’s construction involves linking the robot’s central processing unit to a smartphone using BLE technology and affixing an array of sensors, motors, and assorted plastic components to the robot’s framework. Users can then program the robot’s logic, executing a preprogrammed algorithm or following commands from the smartphone.

The firmware, developed by Softeq, served as the conduit between the smartphone and the robot. This custom firmware facilitated the integration of intricate sensors and motors, and its design fostered scalability, enabling the on-demand addition and programming of extra features.

Maintaining Affordability While Maximizing Functionality

The goal of affordability was a cornerstone of this project. Maintaining cost-effectiveness was not just a goal; it was a central requirement. Through careful planning and iterative development, Softeq optimized the costs of the various plastic parts and electronics without compromising the robot’s functionality.

This collaboration resulted in a groundbreaking product: an affordable, programmable robot kit with the same functionality as its pricier counterparts. It was a shining testament to the potential of IoT, demonstrating how this technology could transform the educational sector by making learning experiences more engaging and interactive without limiting access through prohibitive pricing.

Teltonika launches the production of a medical wristband to help people with heart diseases

Lithuanian high-tech company group Teltonika has launched the production of TeltoHeart, a multifunctional smart medical wristband designed to help people with heart rhythm problems.

According to the creators of the innovative device, it is a unique gadget globally in terms of its technical capabilities.

The idea to produce such a device came to Arvydas Paukštys, the founder of IoT company Teltonika, about three years ago when he read an article in the media about the fact that Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) scientists, together with representatives of Vilnius University, had developed a highly accurate algorithm for detecting atrial fibrillation. Teltonika agreed with KTU and VU to license this unique and patented technology, but this was just the beginning of a long road.

The project was undertaken by a team of more than 15 people from Teltonika Telemedic, founded at the height of the pandemic. To create a working product, the first step was to implement the algorithm, set up the software, create the design of the wristband and certificate the product. After many days spent perfecting the functions of TeltoHeart, Teltonika launched the mass production of this medical wristband in Lithuania. The first products will go to foreign markets such as India, Cyprus, Spain and Peru, and some of them will stay in Lithuania, where several private medical institutions have already expressed their interest in testing these medical wristbands.

“Around 1 billion people globally suffer from various heart rhythm disorders. Such ailments can be treated most effectively if diagnosed in time, and smart devices are already helping. We have developed a medical-grade smart wristband that can automatically detect atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias, such as when the pulse suddenly drops or rises more than normal. If the wristband detects an arrhythmia, or if the person feels unwell, or if the pulse slows down or rises more than normal, they are advised to record a six-derivative electrocardiogram, which allows the doctor to make a diagnosis and prescribe the necessary treatment. Considering the technical capabilities of this wristband, we believe that it is a medical device that is unique and exceptional in the world,” says Martynas Osauskas, CEO of Teltonika Telemedic.

Teltonika Telemedic offers a complete telemedicine ecosystem called MyHealth, which consists of the TeltoHeart wristband, a data-collecting app for mobile devices and the TeltoCare platform for doctors to monitor patients’ data, for more efficient work in medical institutions.

“Heart rate monitoring needs to be carried out over a long period, but until now, the devices offered for this purpose have been either very inconvenient or expensive. The smart medical wristband developed by Teltonika is efficient, functional and comfortable to wear for long-term heart rate monitoring. In addition, the ecosystem of telemedicine devices that will be developed in the future will help to address more persistent problems in the healthcare system. For example, doctors will be able to serve more patients with the ability to analyse data remotely. And by diagnosing diseases at an early stage, treatment costs and hospital workload can be reduced,” M. Osauskas predicts.

It is planned that the TeltoHeart smart medical wristband will also be available for personal use from sales partners or medical institutions.

The car seat introduces a holistic approach to safety, focusing on both the materials it is made of and the technology that has been added to it. Developed by Shy Mindel, an aeronautical engineer turned parent, the seat is introducing a new standard of safety for children.

“I was surprised to learn that the most important people in our lives, our children, sit in safety seats primarily made out of plastic and Styrofoam,” said Shy Mindel, CEO of babyark. “While safety features for adults in vehicles have evolved dramatically over the past 10 years, child passenger safety technology has remained stagnant. babyark is approaching safety through the hardware, the actual seat, and the software, including the safety sensors that communicate with the app. The result is a car seat that takes a holistic approach to safety.”

Made of anticrash materials, the babyark energy absorption technology is built around a high strength steel SafeCoil™ shock-absorbing system that gently slows the seat’s forward momentum during a crash. Carbon fiber and D3O™, the world’s most technologically-advanced impact absorbing polymer tested in extreme military applications, complement the babyark suite of safety solutions. In addition to top materials, the baybark smart seat uses IoT technology to supply caregivers with real time indications regarding child passenger safety at all times. With 14 sensors embedded in the base of the seat, it alerts the driver via the personal babyark app if the seat is installed correctly, if the child is buckled or if the child is forgotten in the vehicle. The app then provides instructions on how to ensure that everything is correct, giving caregivers the peace of mind that their child is safely in their seat on each and every drive. The app is available on Android and iOS.

“Car seats are a major source of anxiety for parents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 59% of car seats are installed incorrectly,” said Yifat Ryce, Chief Marketing Officer of babyark and licensed CPST.

Infrafon is using Sequans’ second-generation LTE-M/NB-IoT module, Monarch 2 GM02S, that delivers ultra-low power consumption and a very high level of security. ROOQ Boxing technology delivers sophisticated performance data via sensors, app and online portal.

Global technology solutions provider Arrow Electronics and ROOQ, an innovator in sports measurement and analytics technology, have teamed up to create the ROOQ BOX, a sensor technology that enables boxers to monitor and review their performance using data that was previously only available under laboratory conditions.

ROOQ BOX comprises a pair of sensors worn within a strap on each wrist. The sensors record the movements made during boxing activity. The data is then analysed in the accompanying ROOQ App and cloud using machine learning algorithms to provide a precise record of the session. Using this information, boxers and trainers can create a detailed picture of the training session including punch count, punch speeds, variability and punch force. The algorithm has been trained to identify eight different types of punches and to automatically categorize these while filtering out non-boxing specific motions.

The data delivered by the sensor technology, which was inaccessible to athletes until now, provides an invaluable tool to help boxers monitor and improve their performance. This information can be shared with their coaches. In developing the system, ROOQ has drawn on a wide range of experience from within its team including data, software, hardware and firmware specialists, sports scientists and mathematicians as well as boxers and coaches. This experience reaches to the highest level: ROOQ’s chief sports officer, Henry Maske, is an Olympic boxing champion (gold medal, Seoul 1988) and professional world champion (1993 to 1996).

Arrow has been instrumental in leading the project in the firmware and hardware area between the suppliers of components, development and manufacturing services. Also, Arrow’s eInfochips engineering services were utilized in the project. Mace Constructs a Smarter Way to Work with RealWear Wearables During Pandemic

Enabling a reduction of travel by 75% with RealWear device running Microsoft Teams by its Façade Team, the construction leader plans to deploy more than 150 devices over the next few months.

RealWear, Inc., the global leader of hands-free head-mounted wearables, today announced that Mace Group (‘Mace’), a global consultancy and construction firm headquartered in London, deployed RealWear’s assisted reality wearable computers running voice-enabled Microsoft Teams, paving the way forward for the global construction industry.

Throughout this global pandemic, the voice-activated RealWear HMT-1 wearable device has enabled hundreds of its workers and clients to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and reduce its carbon footprint via using the device for remote inspections during the construction process. The wearable deployment marks a first for the construction industry.

Mace works on a number of construction projects both in the UK and across the globe. When the pandemic hit and travel restrictions came into effect, Mace envisioned an entirely new and safer way to inspect building façades. To operate as effectively and as safely as possible under seemingly indefinite social distancing restrictions, it needed a solution that would enable inspection work to still be carried out but with minimal people onsite than normally permitted.

RealWear’s assisted reality head-mounted wearable computers require only a single site inspector to be physically present, while multiple others ‘view’ the site clearly and remotely from their own location, via a feed that streams from the innovative headset directly to the viewer’s handheld or laptop computer.

The technology negates the need to physically travel to a site, while also delivering on Mace’s requirement for its workforce to be fully connected through remote collaboration. Furthermore, the deployment has banished the logistical and planning complexities of trying to coordinate the diaries of several site inspectors to be present at the same time on the same day. Since the completion of the deployment this month Mace has been able to reduce in-person site visits, and its Façade team has seen a 75% reduction in travel; not only has this resulted in a reduction in carbon emissions, but the time saved has freed up staff to be more productive during the course of their day.

“With its willingness to embrace the future, it’s appropriate that Mace is at the head of the curve within the construction industry with respect to deploying wearable technology,” commented Phil Sedge, Head of Facade, Mace Group.

“Since the deployment, we have seen improvements in the decision-making process, and we’re able to share real-time information instantaneously. The technology has enabled us to reduce the number of staff travelling to site, without any compromises to the quality of our work. The time saving and environmental benefits deliver further advantages.”

He added: “RealWear’s reinvestment back into product development has also impressed us, which means that the foundations of this technology are future proofed. We only wish we had deployed it sooner.”

Following an in-depth consultation with RealWear partner, SystemActive, which involved various demos via video conference, Mace selected RealWear’s purpose built, voice enabled HMT-1 over other solutions available in the market, including smart glasses. The RealWear headsets met Mace’s requirements for no compromises on safety, for hands-free operation and the ability to clip to the side of hard hats. Its other requirements included durability and functionality at the right price point, two other areas where RealWear excelled.

The deployment began in June 2020. SystemActive worked with Mace’s IT team to create a bespoke operating system for the HMT-1, which was tailored so that many of its out-of-the-box features could only be used for collaborating with clients and colleagues who were not physically present on site. Once the operating system was set up, the wearable headsets arrived on site and were ready to use. Training from both RealWear and SystemActive included on-boarding sessions to bring Mace’s personnel up to speed on how to log on to video conferencing and join meetings, and a walkthrough of the functions of the camera and video stream.

“From a health and safety, durability and price perspective, RealWear’s device ticked a lot of boxes. We worked with the senior teams at Mace to ensure the device was as easy as possible for everyone to use and that the bespoke operating system met Mace’s needs. We’re thrilled with the positive feedback from Mace on the deployment and look forward to working with the team in a continued rollout,” added Ross Riley, Head of Immersive, SystemActive.

“RealWear’s HMT-1 is purpose built for productivity, even in extreme environments due to its ruggedness, durability and functionality,” said Jon Arnold, VP of Sales, RealWear Inc.

“With software updates to come in March that will further improve the user experience, the HMT-1 is set to be a central part of Mace’s workflow, both now and in the future,” he added.

Based on this level of success, Mace plans to surpass the 150-unit mark over the next few months as it ramps up deployment of RealWear’s HMT-1 globally. The company has recently procured more units to go out to one of its sectors in Peru to help with monitoring of a project and its various phases, including safety inspections. It has also increased awareness through its supply chain who have started to adopt the technology.

It’s for these reasons that IoT-enabled lone worker devices have become popular across many different industries, from transport and construction to policing and factory work.

With alarms that can be activated manually, or in many cases even detect when a user has fallen and automatically get in touch with a chosen contact, an employee can complete their work with the knowledge that they’re covered.

Integrating technology

The benefits of using IoT devices for health and safety go far beyond helping workers in a specific moment. The data collected can be invaluable when it comes to conducting future risk assessments and designing work to be the safest and most efficient it can be.

Without this data, which can range from real-time location information to the number of incidents that have occurred over a period of time, health and safety leaders are left flying blind and risk assessments will inevitably be left with large gaps that could lead to avoidable accidents and injury down the line.

Automation is also a huge opportunity for time-poor business leaders who simply don’t have the resource to collect this information manually.

Guardhat Releases Smart Glasses Based Solutions for Front-Line Workers

International industry leaders in wearables and IoT software partner to debut new products.

Guardhat today announced the release of their new smart glasses-based solutions that ensure the safety and productivity of front-line workers.

The new offering is a result of a partnership between Guardhat and Vuzix Corporation, both industry experts in wearable safety technology.

Both glasses solutions provide hands-free operation, voice commands, wireless connectivity, and interoperability with Guardhat’s general-purpose Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform, Kyra. Using Kyra, Vuzix’s smart glasses connect to Guardhat’s Theia app, which allows users to track real-time location with inbuilt GPS.

Additional key features include wireless connectivity over Wi-Fi* with offline operation when disconnected, VOIP audio-visual communications/telephony, and local media capture (images, video) with sync to Kyra backend. Those wearing these glasses can also call for help by sounding the panic alarm using voice activation or the dedicated button.

The glasses, provided by Vuzix, include two wearable variants, the HG1 Smart Glasses (Vuzix M400) and the HG2 Smart Glasses (Vuzix M4000). The key differentiator between these two glasses is that the HG2 comes with a see-through waveguide display. The HG2 also comes with a larger WVGA 16×9 854×480 color display; 28 degrees, equivalent to a 9″ mobile device screen seen at 18″. Both devices use the cutting-edge Qualcomm XR platform, which makes them perform better than the competition.

IoT Security Foundation launches co-ordinated vulnerability disclosure platform for IoT industry

Vulnerable Things.com helps vendors prepare for IoT security regulations and assist security researchers with vulnerability reporting.

An online platform designed to help IoT vendors receive, assess, manage and mitigate vulnerability reports has been launched by the IoT Security Foundation (IoTSF).

Vulnerable Things.com aims to simplify the reporting and management of vulnerabilities whilst helping IoT vendors comply with new consumer IoT security standards and regulations.

As the first globally applicable standard for consumer IoT cybersecurity, the new ETSI EN 303 645 specification requires IoT vendors – which could include device manufacturers or importers/distributors – to publish a clear and transparent vulnerability disclosure policy; establish an internal vulnerability management procedure; make contact information for vulnerability reporting publicly available; and continually monitor for and identify security vulnerabilities within their products.

Governments around the world including in the UK, Australia, Singapore, Finland and the American states of California and Oregon have already published codes of practice, product labelling schemes or prepared legislation aligned to the standard. Implementing a means to accept vulnerability reports is a common feature of these initiatives. Without mechanisms to report, manage and resolve vulnerabilities – such as Co-ordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) – the security of consumer IoT products diminishes over time and the risk of attack or abuse increases.

John Moor, Managing Director of the IoT Security Foundation, said:

“Vulnerability management is such a fundamental element to IoT cyber-hygiene that it is no surprise that governments and regulators around the world are making this a mandatory requirement.”

“As a world leading expert authority on IoT security, IoTSF has published vulnerability disclosure best practices and industry status[1] reports. Our conclusions are that industry must do more to protect their customers and their own businesses. We therefore see the need to drive this vital security practice and aim to help make it as simple as possible with the launch of the Vulnerable Things platform – especially for the uninitiated and firms who may lack resources. The service brokers good communications between researchers and vendors and guides both through the process until complete.”

“We are piloting the service to test the likely demand and gain feedback for users.”

Vulnerabilities can put user safety and personal data at risk and could place an IoT vendor in breach of data protection regulations. Failure by a vendor to respond to a reported vulnerability, whether from a consumer or a specialist security researcher, could result in uncontrolled public disclosure of the vulnerability which would increase the risk of attacks by bad actors. Fixing a vulnerability promptly reduces risks to users, devices, networks and IoT manufacturers.

Matt Warman, the UK Government’s Digital Infrastructure Minister said:
“I welcome this new initiative to help industry improve the security of internet of things devices and boost our burgeoning digital economy while protecting people online. We want everyone to have confidence that the internet-connected products they are buying have stronger security and are working on legislation in this field to help make this a reality.”

VulnerableThings.com aims to provide an off-the-shelf, user-friendly vulnerability management tool and other valuable member resources including policy templates, issue resolution guidelines and a directory of specialist advisors to help IoT manufacturers prepare for emerging regulations and to maintain compliance. CVD must become an essential part of the culture of successful IoT vendors and needs to be understood and supported by a business’s board of directors, compliance officer, product managers, product development managers, product security, supply chain managers and public relations teams.

Manufacturers that subscribe to VulnerableThings will have access to a dashboard that will guide them through the vulnerability resolution process and facilitate communication with the reporter. Where a vulnerability is reported in a product from a vendor that hasn’t registered with the service, an alert will be sent to a public email address of the manufacturer who will then have the opportunity to securely access the details of the vulnerability report by coming to VulnerableThings.

Access to Vulnerable Things.com is available free until 31 January 2021. Subscribing to the service also provides access to professional support for co-ordinated disclosure announcements.

While vulnerabilities can be reported by any individual anonymously, by registering with VulnerableThings.com, security researchers are provided with a dashboard that allows them to monitor the progress towards resolving vulnerabilities they have reported to different manufacturers. Promoting dialogue between vendors and security researchers will contribute to the success of the IoT ecosystem.

Worldwide Wearables Market Forecast to Maintain Double-Digit Growth in 2020 and Through 2024, According to IDC

Global shipments of wearable devices are expected to total 396.0 million units in 2020 according to new data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker.

This marks a 14.5% increase from the 345.9 million units shipped in 2019. Looking ahead, IDC forecasts shipment volume to have a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.4% and total 637.1 million units in 2024.

The first half of 2020 delivered positive results despite the impact of COVID-19 on the global economy. Even though vendors scaled down production and end users were quarantined, demand for wearables remained steady. The market was propelled by near-record demand for hearables, which was enough to offset slightly lower demand for watches and wristbands. The second half of 2020 is on pace to continue this trend and with the launch of new products – including hearables, watches, and wristbands – from multiple vendors, the wearables market is on track to reach nearly 400 million units this year.

Beyond devices, one trend to watch is the emergence of services to complement wearables. Apple’s recently announced Fitness+, Amazon’s new Halo, and Fitbit’s Fitbit Premium connect users with health and fitness content (i.e., guided workouts, coaching, and diet advice) while incorporating data from their wearable device. Several other companies are taking a different route, showing enterprise customers how to keep their employees physically distant and detect early signs of potential illness. These services and others to come will increase the demand for wearables.

Ramon T. Llamas, research director, Mobile Devices and AR/VR, said:

“Wearable devices and services will evolve together in the coming quarters. Wearables are the perfect device to collect user data and services provide guidance and actionable insight. Together, they offer the user a virtual coach to make better decisions and achieve their goals.”

“Device makers are also laying the groundwork that will allow consumers to use multiple wearables in conjunction with each other,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC Mobile Device Trackers. “Imagine tying positional and audio input from hearables with health metrics from the wrist to gauge a user’s level of attention or excitement in the surrounding environment. That’s a powerful new experience that can bring added utility to consumers and vendors alike.”

Category Highlights

Hearables* will account for the majority of shipments throughout the forecast while posting a market beating CAGR of 14.1%. A combination of drivers will sustain hearable growth: an expanding list of vendors with a growing number of devices; smartphones abandoning the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of Bluetooth connections; lower prices; and an expansion of use cases beyond audio content consumption, like health and fitness monitoring, smart assistants, and connection to home and work IoT systems.

Watches**, comprised of smartwatches and basic watches, will experience the highest CAGR at 14.3%. The smartwatch market will see its operating system (OS) landscape shift as Google’s WearOS acquires FitbitOS to bolster its health and fitness offerings and new vendor partners are added to its list. Samsung’s Tizen will slowly gain share with its own fitness-focused and productivity-driven Galaxy watches. At the top is Apple’s watchOS, which will benefit from the introduction of its new Watch SE, sitting between its premium and entry-level devices. Meanwhile, basic watches will benefit from kids’ connected watches alongside hybrid- and GPS-equipped watches.

Wristbands will slowly crawl upward with shipments growing at a CAGR of 2.4%. Even as average selling prices dip below $40 USD by the end of the forecast, there will still be space for more expensive models whose feature sets closely mimic those found on smartwatches, including mobile payments, smartphone notifications, and advanced fitness features. Still, the primary driver for wristband shipments will be inexpensive step- and calorie counters.

Vodafone’s R&D team have built a prototype product recall system that allows manufacturers to notify consumers of recalled faulty or potentially dangerous electrical goods, and shut them down remotely if needed, including tumble dryers, washing machines, fridges and freezers.

The system in development will help boost Vodafone’s leading position in providing secure and reliable connectivity to an increasing number of smart home appliances. Vodafone is already working with household and commercial appliance manufacturers on mobile controls and network technology. These give consumers peace of mind that they can control their devices remotely and will be notified when, for example, they leave their freezer door open.

Vodafone IoT alert module for smart appliances

Using Vodafone’s Global Internet of Things (IoT) technology – the world’s largest platform of its kind with more than 100 million connections – Vodafone’s engineers are now turning their attention to home safety. They have developed a prototype system which uses a miniature electronic device module – similar in size to a SIM card – installed within the appliance to provide a link over Vodafone’s network. This allows a manufacturer to notify consumers of a potential issue with their appliance and, if necessary, disable the appliance by using Vodafone’s network, reducing the risk of harm to the appliance, consumer or their home. In situations that pose no risk, companies can send a message via the Vodafone system to an LED on the product to notify consumers of the recall of their appliance.

With many large appliances recalled each year worldwide and serious faults frequently linked to fires, the Vodafone Safety Alert Message Indicator (SAMI) overcomes the issue of manufacturers not being able to contact the affected customers. This is particularly relevant if the appliance is not registered to a postal address or is re-sold. The manufacturer can also keep an audit trail of messages delivered successfully to their customers using this Vodafone service.

Sami Gabriel, a Distinguished Engineer at Vodafone Group’s R&D centre, demonstrating the smart product recall system. It allows manufacturers to notify consumers of recalled faulty or potentially dangerous electrical goods, and shut them down remotely if needed.

Vodafone Group Chief Technology Officer Johan Wibergh said: “Our technology is already allowing manufacturers to let consumers control home appliances when they are out and about. Now we have the potential to help manufacturers stay connected to their products in the field, enabling them to manage more effectively both servicing and safety recalls.”

“The initial feedback from fire brigades for our system in development has been positive and we are now looking to work with manufacturers to make the IoT Safety Alert Message Indicator a reality. This is especially important at a time when the number of electronic appliances per household are predicted to increase and we spend more time at home.”

Vodafone’s engineers developed the IoT module with safety in mind. It works independently to the host product and uses only a small amount of direct current (DC) battery power to avoid the mains power supply. The Vodafone Safety Alert Message Indicator has received innovation awards from both the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Electrical Safety First (ESF) – a UK charity dedicated to reducing and preventing damage, injuries and death caused by electricity.

Telit, a global enabler of the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced that ORBI is using the Telit FN980 5G data card series for the world’s first football helmet with 360° video cameras shooting in 8K at 60 frames per second (fps).

The ORBI 5G helmets enable fans to experience the game from the player’s perspective and highlight how Telit is enabling innovative companies to quickly add 5G to create breakthrough products and services.

Each ORBI 5G helmet has six embedded cameras, which use the Telit FN980 series to stream footage to a remote server. Artificial intelligence stitches the feeds in real time into a single video delivered to audiences, such as broadcast TV and virtual reality (VR) headsets. The ORBI production systems can support all 22 players’ cameras during a game.

The Telit FN980 series enables ORBI and its clients, such as media companies, to take advantage of the 5G networks currently installed at nearly half of all U.S. NFL stadiums. Featuring the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X55 5G Modem-RF System, the FN980 series is ideal for high-performance, bandwidth-intensive applications such as professional video broadcasting and digital signage.

The data cards support all major frequency bands, whether mmWave or sub-6 GHz, giving ORBI 5G helmet users maximum deployment flexibility. The FN980m supports the Qualcomm® QTM525 mmWave antenna module for near-the-ground, low-power indoor and outdoor applications. It also supports the Qualcomm® QTM527 mmWave extended-range antenna module for high-mount outdoor applications.

Orange Business Services and De Beers Co-innovate Geofencing Solution to Enhance Crew Safety in Offshore Mining

Orange Business Services and De Beers Marine South Africa, a division of De Beers – the world’s leading diamond company, have jointly installed and tested a customized IoT solution to provide geofencing to maintain safe working distances for crew around the heavy machinery involved in marine diamond mining operations.

The new solution was successfully piloted on board the MV Mafuta, currently the world’s largest offshore diamond mining vessel owned and operated by Debmarine Namibia and operating up to 150 km off the coast of Namibia, in southern Africa.

Diamond mining vessels bring crew and heavy machinery into relatively close proximity, and De Beers is committed to ensuring the highest standards of operating safety for all personnel. The Orange IoT solution was developed in response to De Beers’ ‘zero harm’ objectives. It followed an initial engagement and joint exploratory workshop with the Orange Business Services team in South Africa and focused on IoT technologies, such as Bluetooth Low Energy locators and wearable sensors, as a precision crew locator tool, integrated with onboard antennas and an Orange software engine.

In the pilot, Orange Business Services imported the Mafuta’s AutoCAD files and undertook an onboard site survey to map antenna locations to geofence a predetermined area on the vessel. Ten crew members were equipped with wrist sensors. If one of the crew breached the geofenced area onboard the vessel, the ship’s bridge was alerted immediately.

De Beers Group Technology SA, an R&D arm of De Beers Group, is now further exploring additional applications, such as a breach alert function to link the sensors directly to the mining machinery via a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) control system and PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), to facilitate a failsafe cut-off in the event of a breach in the geofence.

Gerhardus Theron, Vessel Manager of the MV Mafuta said:

“Debmarine Namibia has a very clear aim of ‘zero harm’ across all our operations, and we are constantly looking at ways of enhancing employee safety and especially around the heavy machinery required for diamond recovery operations. The initial engagement consultation and joint workshop with the team from Orange Business Services was very productive and quickly identified the potential for an IoT solution to ensure the wellbeing of personnel onboard the vessels. We quickly moved to a pilot phase, which has now confirmed the potential of this innovative approach that we could embed within our existing safety processes and procedures.”

“This smart IoT solution developed with De Beers is a great example of innovating and co-creating with our customer. The geofencing pilot has already proved successful in one of the most challenging heavy industrial environments – a floating diamond mine at sea, with prolonged exposure to strong vibration and corrosive saltwater.”

“The next phase of its development will aim to refine the interface and data collection capabilities, and include testing a trigger function to deactivate machinery in the event of a breach of the geofence by a crew member,” said Keith Matthews, Country Manager for South Africa, Orange Business Services.

Global Smartwatch Market Revenue up 20% in H1 2020, Led by Apple, Garmin & Huawei

The top three brands contributed more than 69% of the total market revenue.

The global smartwatch market posted a healthy 20% revenue growth in H1 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic and shipments remaining flat compared to the same period last year, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s IoT service.

Senior Analyst Sujeong Lim said:

“The smartwatch space remains a popular consumer device segment, compared to the downturn seen in smartphone demand and many other segments in the first six months of 2020 due to the devastation caused by COVID-19. Close to 42 million smartwatches were shipped in H1 2020 as wearables continue to see greater demand with consumers becoming more health conscious.”

“India (+57% YoY), Europe (+9% YoY) and the US (+5% YoY), the most affected regions of COVID-19, saw a healthy growth in smartwatch shipments which offset the decline in other markets.”

Lim added: “Apple continued to dominate the smartwatch market both in volume and value. Apple captured a record half of the market in terms of revenue due to strong demand for the Apple Watch S5 models.”

Vice President Research Neil Shah said: “Huawei saw healthy volumes (+57% YoY), jumping to the second spot globally in H1 2020. Huawei benefitted from significant demand for its smartwatches, especially the Watch GT2 series in Asian markets. Garmin, the second-largest brand in terms of revenue globally, continued to make strides cornering the sports enthusiast and athlete market. The brand saw healthy demand (+31% YoY) for its Forerunner and Fenix line, making up one of the broadest portfolios of smartwatches in the market. Europe and North America remain the key markets for Garmin.”

Research Director Jeff Fieldhack said: “Google WearOS continues to account for 10% of the total smartwatch market, behind Apple WatchOS. Huawei’s Lite OS and Amazfit’s Amazfit OS are growing fast. Further, the cellular-capable smartwatch is becoming more popular and accounts for more than one in four smartwatches shipped, benefitting the likes of Qualcomm.”

A Comprehensive Project Plan For Building A Smart Home Using IoT

The European Commission today launched an antitrust competition inquiry into the sector of Internet of Things (IoT) for consumer-related products and services in the European Union.

The sector inquiry will focus on consumer-related products and services that are connected to a network and can be controlled at a distance, for example via a voice assistant or mobile device. These include smart home appliances and wearable devices. Knowledge about the market gained through the inquiry will contribute to the Commission’s enforcement of competition law in this sector.

Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said:
“The consumer Internet of Things is expected to grow significantly in the coming years and become commonplace in the daily lives of European consumers. Imagine a smart fridge making your grocery list, you pulling up that grocery list onto your smart device and order a delivery from a shop that sends the groceries to your door that unlocks automatically with a word. The possibilities seem endless.”

“But access to large amounts of user data appears to be the key for success in this sector, so we have to make sure that market players are not using their control over such data to distort competition, or otherwise close off these markets for competitors. This sector inquiry will help us better understand the nature and likely effects of the possible competition problems in this sector.”

Despite the relatively early stage of development of the sector for the Internet of Things for consumer-related products and services in the European Union, there are indications that certain company practices may structurally distort competition. In particular, there are indications relating to restrictions of data access and interoperability, as well as certain forms of self-preferencing and practices linked to the use of proprietary standards. Internet of Things ecosystems are often characterised by strong network effects and economies of scale, which might lead to the fast emergence of dominant digital ecosystems and gatekeepers and might present tipping risks.

Therefore, through this competition sector inquiry, the Commission will gather market information to better understand the nature, prevalence and effects of these potential competition issues, and to assess them in light of EU antitrust rules.

The sector inquiry will cover products such as wearable devices (e.g. smart watches or fitness trackers) and connected consumer devices used in the smart home context, such as fridges, washing machines, smart TVs, smart speakers and lighting systems. The sector inquiry will also collect information about the services available via smart devices, such as music and video streaming services and about the voice assistants used to access them.

If, after analysing the results, the Commission identified specific competition concerns, it could open case investigations to ensure compliance with EU rules on restrictive business practices and abuse of dominant market positions (Articles 101 and 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union – TFEU).

The inquiry complements other actions launched within the framework of the Commission’s digital strategy, in particular regulatory initiatives related to artificial intelligence (AI), data and digital platforms.

Next steps

In the coming weeks, the Commission will send requests for information to a range of players active in the Internet of Things for consumer-related products and services throughout the EU. The companies concerned may include, for example, smart device manufacturers, software developers and related service providers. Under EU antitrust rules the Commission can require companies and trade associations to supply information, documents or statements as part of a sector inquiry.

The Commission expects to publish a preliminary report on the replies for consultation in the spring of 2021. The final report would follow in the summer of 2022.
