The installed base of connected vending machines worldwide to reach 12.3 million by 2027

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the global installed base of connected vending machines reached an estimated 5.8 million units in 2022.

North America represents the largest share of these machines, closely followed by the Rest of the World markets. Both are estimated to have installed bases of around 2.1 million each.

In Europe, the installed base of connected vending machines is estimated to have reached around 1.5 million units. Berg Insight forecasts that the number of connected vending machines worldwide will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.4 percent to reach 12.3 million units by 2027. As a result, the global penetration rate will reach 75.7 percent at the end of the forecast period.

The global connected vending solution market is served by a variety of players. Many of the leading providers are specialised technology companies offering connected vending telemetry and cashless payment solutions. US-based Cantaloupe is established as the clear leader in terms of installed base with more than 900,000 connected vending machines, mainly in North America.

Other leading technology suppliers include Crane Payment Innovations, Nayax, Ingenico and Televend (INTIS). The latter has continued to show significant growth and is clearly established as a top player on the European market. MatiPay, Vianet Group and Vendon are additional examples of technology players with relatively significant installed bases in Europe. In China, InHand networks holds a prominent position and is estimated to have installed its solutions in close to 300,000 vending machines by the end of 2022.

“The number of connected vending machines continues to grow and has now reached very high levels, particularly in North America”, said Felix Linderum, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight.

In Europe and the Rest of the World markets penetration levels are still modest but growing. Overall, cashless payments continue to be the main driver for adding connectivity in vending machines.

“This development was further reinforced by the Covid-19 pandemic”, continued Mr. Linderum.

He adds that because of the pandemic, there has been an accelerated adoption of cashless and contactless payments as users seek versatility, convenience and safety to a larger extent than before. Outside of North America and Europe, the main driver for growth is the growing installed base of connected vending machines in China. While stringent lockdowns enforced during the Covid-19 pandemic led to a slowdown in the country, there has been a noteworthy surge in the number of vending machines in China over the past few years. Berg Insight anticipates that the country is poised to emerge as a key player in the connected vending space.

Mr. Linderum concluded:

“Mobile payments and remote management of multimedia content are basically standard on the vending machines in China. Facial recognition technology is also a growing trend and enables pay-with-your-face functionality.”

KORE, the global pure-play Internet of Things (“IoT”) hyperscaler, and provider of IoT Connectivity, Solutions and Analytics, has announced the launch of its new vertical offering in retail solutions.

The retail industry is rapidly undergoing a digital transformation, and KORE has aligned its portfolio to offer high-bandwidth solutions to meet these needs.

The KORE Retail solution includes high bandwidth 5G cellular connectivity through fixed wireless access (FWA) to provide high-speed internet access traditionally available through wireline solutions. As many new retail applications rely on higher data volume and speed, a 5G network can offer greater bandwidth to support these new and evolving applications.

Adding best-in-class 5G technology and connectivity, however, can be challenging, especially when addressing the different carrier needs in locations across the country.

With this new pre-configured solution, KORE is providing high bandwidth digital transformation enablement to a national restaurant chain. KORE is leveraging Cradlepoint Netcloud with 5G wireless edge solutions as this restaurant chain moves to modernize its connectivity by leveraging 5G cellular across its hundreds of U.S. locations.

Without utilizing KORE as a connectivity provider, this restaurant chain would have had to individually source cellular connectivity based on location. KORE is able to provide a singular approach to multi-carrier connectivity and also provide this customer with a connectivity management platform to control and monitor its usage and billing in a unified approach. KORE is also providing onboarding via its customer success department and 24/7 support throughout the implementation of the solution, making the deployment simple, seamless and decreasing time to market.

Shipments of NFC-ready POS terminals reached 75.3 million in 2021

According to a new research report from IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the market for NFC-ready POS terminals continued to show strong momentum in 2021 with annual shipments reaching an estimated 75.3 million units worldwide.

The attach rate for NFC was highest in EU27+3 and North America, where 98 percent of the POS terminals shipped featured NFC. NFC was also a very popular feature in many other major markets worldwide, including Brazil, Turkey and China. On a global basis, about 80 percent of the POS terminals shipped in 2021 included NFC.

Berg Insight projects the global installed base of NFC-ready POS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.6 percent from 168..7 million units in 2021 to 291.9 million units in 2026. As a result, more than 93 percent of the world’s POS terminals will be NFC-ready in 2026, up from 73 percent in 2021.

“The mPOS terminal market is growing at about the same rate as the traditional POS terminal segment and there are more than 70 vendors active on the global market today”, said Johan Fagerberg, Principal Analyst at Berg Insight.

mPOS is the use of consumer-oriented mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones that function as a point-of-sale terminal to facilitate payment card transactions through a connection to a card-accepting reader. The attach rate for NFC in the mPOS segment was 72 percent in 2021 as NFC-ready mPOS terminal shipments reached 29.4 million units. Berg Insight forecasts that global shipments of NFC-ready mPOS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.2 percent in the next five years to reach 50.1 million units by 2026.

Mr Fagerberg concludes:

“The growth is driven by the increase in mPOS terminal shipments from 40.9 million units in 2021 to 53.0 million units in 2026, as well as by a growth in the attach rate from 72 percent to 95 percent.”

Today Atmosic Technologies, an innovator in energy harvesting wireless platforms for the Internet of Things (IoT), and ETAG Tech, an leader in ultra-low power and high-performance electronic shelf labels (ESLs), today announced a partnership to bring Atmosic’s ultra-low power wireless solutions to ETAG Tech’s ESL portfolio.

ETAG Tech is using Atmosic’s ATM2 system-on-chips (SoCs) for several ESL designs and will be incorporating Atmosic’s ATM3 SoC in future designs to take advantage of energy harvesting technology.

ETAG Tech selected Atmosic’s ATM2 series over a proprietary implementation since Atmosic’s solutions have best-in-class power savings. The ATM2 series is Bluetooth 5 standard-compliant and integrates Atmosic’s Lowest Power Radio technology to reduce power consumption low enough for ESLs and other connected devices to last years on a single battery, without needing replacement. ETAG Tech is also looking at deploying the ATM3 series in its next generation of ESL designs to take advantage of Atmosic’s Controlled Energy Harvesting technology, which can harvest energy from ambient light. The same SoC can also harness from other sources including radio, mechanical/kinetic motion, and even thermal sources to further reduce battery consumption. In some cases, Atmosic’s ATM3 series can enable devices to operate without any batteries at all.

Shufersal, Israel’s largest retailer, is already embracing real-time visibility through adoption of Wiliot’s RTI solution, creating a fully transparent supply chain from farm to store and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality produce, extending shelf life, and minimizing food waste. In Summer 2021, Wiliot and Shufersal completed a successful pilot of Wiliot’s RTI solution and its ability to track the movement and condition of produce from the time it’s picked to its placement in Shufersal stores around Israel.

The kit contains everything retailers need to experience the IoT transformation that Wiliot represents. It includes Wiliot’s postage stamp-sized computers – the IoT Pixels – pre-mounted on both cardboard and a coffee cup.

The IoT Pixels can sense a range of physical and environment data, such as temperature, fill level, motion, location changes, humidity, and proximity.

Shipments of NFC-ready POS terminals reached 67.2 million in 2020

According to a new research report from specialist IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the market for NFC-ready POS terminals continued to show strong momentum in 2020 with annual shipments reaching an estimated 67.2 million units worldwide.

The attach rate for NFC was highest in EU27+3 and North America, where 96 percent of the POS terminals shipped featured NFC. NFC was also a very popular feature in many other major markets worldwide, including Brazil, Turkey and China. On a global basis, about 74 percent of the POS terminals shipped in 2020 included NFC.

Berg Insight projects the global installed base of NFC-ready POS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.3 percent from 140.5 million units in 2020 to 274.2 million units in 2025. As a result, more than 91 percent of the world’s POS terminals will be NFC-ready in 2025, up from 68 percent in 2020.

“The mPOS terminal market is growing at about the same rate as the traditional POS terminal segment and there are more than 70 vendors active on the global market today,” said Johan Fagerberg, Principal Analyst at Berg Insight.

mPOS is the use of consumer-oriented mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones that function as a point-of-sale terminal to facilitate payment card transactions through a connection to a card-accepting reader. The attach rate for NFC in the mPOS segment was 69 percent in 2020 as NFC-ready mPOS terminal shipments reached 26.9 million units.

Berg Insight forecasts that global shipments of NFC-ready mPOS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.7 percent in the next five years to reach 46.7 million units by 2025.

Mr Fagerberg concludes:

“The growth is driven by the increase in mPOS terminal shipments from 39.2 million units in 2020 to 50.3 million units in 2025, as well as by a growth in the attach rate from 69 percent to 93 percent.”

Global technology company Glory, has today announced the launch of a new Internet-of-Things enabled vending solution with Germany’s largest railway operator Deutsche Bahn.

Passengers at two busy stations in the Munich area will now be able to select fresh, locally sourced produce, either in advance via a web app accessible through their smartphone or directly at the machine.

The first of its kind at any railway station in Germany and branded “Zugvogel” by Deutsche Bahn, the Glory solution combines IoT-enabled hardware with cloud-based software. The connected nature of the solution allows not just convenient consumer ordering through the app, but remote monitoring of the temperature within the refrigerated unit and sell-by dates of the individual items to ensure freshness, together with detailed stock levels to maximise availability of popular products while avoiding waste.

With increased consumer interest in understanding more about their food choices, details of ingredients. allergens and the source of the items available are displayed both through the app and via a large screen on the machine. As part of heightened focus on sustainability and environmental impact, food traceability is becoming more important for many consumers and every product purchased through the Zugvogel machines can be tracked backed to the original, local producer.

When talking about the solution Dominik Cipa, Director of Innovation at Glory Global Solutions said:

Semtech Corporation announced its collaboration with InVue, the leading global provider of intelligent hardware and software systems for retail, consumer electronics and data centers, to integrate the LoRaWAN® protocol into InVue LIVE compatible products across retail display, security and operations.

InVue’s integration of the LoRaWAN protocol into its InVue LIVE products highlights a successful implementation of LoRaWAN into the broader retail industry and focuses on improving the key areas retail continues to invest in – operational readiness, and ultimately, the shopper experience – including product availability, convenience and customer insights. This sophisticated suite of products gives retailers the ability to monitor and manage these operations through a single platform, as well as deliver actionable data and insights in real-time.

Each InVue LIVE device uses a LoRaWAN network to wirelessly connect to the internet while offering bi-directional communication, end-to-end security, mobility, and localization services. This functionality enables retailers to track customer interaction with display merchandise for phones and tablets (S3100V and OnePOD Wireless), reduce theft (OneKEY), measure on-shelf availability (OSA Sensor), and automating on/off as well as planogram reporting electronics displays (TV Manager).

The installed base of cellular IoT devices in the retail industry to reach 116.6 million by 2024

The number of cellular IoT connections in the retail industry reached 72.4 million worldwide in 2019, according to a new research report from Berg Insight.

Cellular IoT technology enables devices such as POS terminals, ATMs, digital signs and ticketing machines to be used at new locations where fixed line connectivity is unavailable or impractical. The technology has a more transformational effect on markets such as vending and parking, where machine operators need to reorganize their operations in order to benefit from the availability of real-time information.

Berg Insight forecasts that the number of cellular IoT connections in the global retail industry will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.0 percent during the next five years to reach 116.6 million connections in 2024. Shipments of cellular IoT devices for retail applications will at the same time increase at a CAGR of 6.1 percent from 31.6 million units in 2019 to 42.4 million units in 2024.

POS terminals constitute the largest device segment and accounted for 91 percent of all cellular IoT connections in the retail industry at the end of 2019. The market for wirelessly connected POS terminals is however relatively mature, and most of the market growth is driven by the increasing use of electronic payments in emerging markets.

“The multi-space parking meter segment was one of the first vertical markets to embrace cellular IoT connectivity and has today reached the highest connectivity penetration of 60 percent”, said Johan Fagerberg, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight. In recent years, cellular connectivity has also found its way into the single-space parking meters market, which has become one of the fastest growing segments. Berg Insight expects that the vending machine segment will present a major opportunity for wireless connectivity in the long term.

Mr Fagerberg concludes:

“Today only 4.2 million of the world’s 15.0 million vending machines are online. Every vending machine will eventually be connected, but costs for the wireless IoT hardware and subscriptions still need to come down further before this vision becomes reality.”

Additionally, when equipped with object detection, the cameras can identify damaged goods in retail warehouses and manage inventory to prevent theft.

A security camera, which was previously only able to provide video data, can now also enable retailers to better understand their customers shopping habits and optimize business operations – offering far more than just a security or health safety tool. Auchan Retail Accelerates Digital Transformation With Trax’s Autonomous Shelf Monitoring Solutions in Portugal

Auchan Retail Portugal, one of Europe’s largest grocery retailers, and Trax, a leading provider of computer vision and analytics solutions for retail, today unveiled an agreement to deploy Trax’s suite of autonomous shelf monitoring solutions, including robots, across Auchan Retail’s entire grocery retail network of 34 supermarkets and hypermarkets in Portugal.

The project starts in the Auchan Alfragide hypermarket in Lisbon.

As part of the agreement, Trax’s autonomous robots, developed in partnership with German robotics company MetraLabs, will be progressively deployed in Auchan stores across the country. The robots will move around the stores up to three times daily to capture photos of every shelf and aisle, which are then digitized at scale, using Trax’s proprietary computer vision and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and converted into reports with actionable metrics and insights. These reports are delivered via a mobile app to store staff, enabling them to analyze, prioritize and resolve shelf issues such as out-of-stocks and pricing compliance issues more quickly and efficiently.

There are lots of other great ways that you can engage with your customers through QR codes. You can take them to product-related videos, or encourage them to download apps that offer more chances to engage.

Retailers are breathing a sigh of relief as they are finally allowed to reopen their businesses and start trading again. But current hygiene rules must still be observed as part of the ‘new normal.’ Business owners must ensure that social distancing rules are being followed on their premises.

A Deutsche Telekom traffic light system placed at the store entrance is a reliable way to control access.

“What businesses now need is reliable solutions for the ‘new normal’ in times of coronavirus,” says Rami Avidan, Senior Vice President for IoT at Deutsche Telekom.

“The access control lighting system helps them keep their customers as safe as they can be.”

The traffic light system is easy to understand. The solution counts every customer entering or leaving the premises. When the maximum number of visitors is reached the traffic light turns red. If customers ignore the signal the system sounds an alarm and an employee is notified via smartphone. As only a limited number of people is allowed to enter, the solution also helps ensure compliance with the social distancing rules in the shop or restaurant itself, and that without owners having to hire additional staff.

But not only in times of crisis is the IoT solution useful. It also offers businesses a significant general advantage by creating transparency on the flow of visitors in their stores. As it visualizes the footfall according to the time of day and day of the week, the system can be used, for example, to plan more accurately the numbers of staff needed at any point in time. Or to decide when best to schedule activities such as shelf-stacking or cleaning the cold store. The solution can be used in many different ways and adapted to different types of business.

The Internet of Things provides greater transparency

Deutsche Telekom’s IoT solution (Internet of Things) consists of two pillars placed a maximum of five meters apart from each other, to the right and left of the entrance door. They are connected to each other via a photoelectric barrier. Every time a customer enters or leaves the shop this movement it reliably detected by sensors, enabling the system to register the number of people who are currently in the shop. The solution’s traffic signal visualizes the current status accordingly, and the values are sent in real time through a gateway to the Cloud of Things via the mobile network.

Shipments of NFC-ready POS terminals reached 47.8 million in 2019

According to a new research report from specialist IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the market for NFC-ready POS terminals continued to show strong momentum in 2019 with annual shipments reaching an estimated 47.8 million units worldwide.

The attach rate for NFC was highest in EU28+2 and North America, where 94 percent of the POS terminals shipped featured NFC. NFC was also a very popular feature in many other major markets worldwide, including Brazil, Turkey and China. On a global basis, about 70 percent of the POS terminals shipped in 2019 included NFC.

Berg Insight projects the global installed base of NFC-ready POS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.9 percent from 100.4 million units in 2019 to 184.5 million units in 2024. As a result, more than 88 percent of the world’s POS terminals will be NFC-ready in 2024, up from 62 percent in 2019.

While the installed base of NFC-ready POS terminals has grown quickly, the contactless technology has in some cases not been activated. Berg Insight estimates that approximately 70.0 million POS terminals accepted contactless payments with Visa payWave, MasterCard PayPass or UnionPay Quickpass at the end of 2019.

Johan Fagerberg, Principal Analyst at Berg Insight, said:

“The mPOS terminal market is growing faster than the traditional POS terminal segment and there are more than 70 vendors active on the global market today.”

Chart: nfc-ready pos and mpos terminals World 2018-2024mPOS is the use of consumer-oriented mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones that function as a point-of-sale terminal to facilitate payment card transactions through a connection to a card-accepting reader. The attach rate for NFC in the mPOS segment reached 64 percent in 2019 as NFC-ready mPOS terminal shipments reached 24.7 million units. Berg Insight forecasts that global shipments of NFC-ready mPOS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7 percent in the next five years to reach 44.9 million units by 2024.

“The growth is driven by the increase in mPOS terminal shipments from 38.3 million units in 2019 to 46.7 million units in 2024, as well as by a growth in the attach rate from 64 percent to 96 percent”, concludes Mr Fagerberg.

Berg Insight, the leading IoT market research provider, today released a new market report covering the connected vending machine market.

The global installed base of connected vending machines reached an estimated 4.2 million units in 2019. North America represents the largest share of around 2.0 million of these machines, whereas the corresponding number for the European market is 1.1 million. The number of connected vending machines in other parts of the world totalled an estimated 1.1 million units at the end of 2019, mainly in Japan, China and Australia.

Berg Insight forecasts that the number of connected machines worldwide will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.3 percent to reach 8.9 million units by 2024. As a result, the global penetration rate will reach 52.0 percent at the end of the forecast period.

The global connected vending solution market is served by a variety of players. Many of the leading providers are specialised technology companies offering connected vending telemetry and cashless payment solutions.

“USA Technologies is following the acquisition of Cantaloupe Systems in 2017 clearly number one in terms of the installed base and has now more than 1.0 million connected vending machines”, said Adam Bjorkman, IoT Analyst, Berg Insight. He adds that other leading technology suppliers include Crane Connectivity Solutions, Ingenico Group, Nayax and Televend (INTIS). Vianet Group, Vendon, MatiPay and InHand Networks are additional examples of technology players with relatively significant installed bases. “InHand Networks is an interesting case due to the prominent position in China”, continued Mr. Bjorkman.

The number of vending machines in China has grown significantly in the last few years and Berg Insight expects the country to become a major player in the connected vending space.

“Mobile payments and remote management of multimedia content are basically standard on the vending machines in China. Facial recognition technology is also a growing trend and enables pay-with-your-face functionality”, concluded Mr. Bjorkman.
